After identifying the types of devices that businesses need to remotely manage, let's examine the software packages that they most frequently use for asset management.
In general, there are three main categories of remote device management software:
Specifically designed to manage mobile devices (Android or iOS) through features like policy management, over-the-air software updates, and flight management, these platforms are known as Mobile Device Management (MDM).
Remote Management and Monitoring (RMM): IT administrators and technical support teams use these tools, which are like MDM but typically focused on devices based on Linux or Microsoft Windows, to manage a remote device environment. Software updates, security vulnerability monitoring, device lifecycle management, onboarding and provisioning, workflow automation, and more can all be aided by RMM. RMM is divided into two categories: RMM tools and PSA software for IT infrastructure (computers, servers, etc.) and RMM for connected products (kiosks, digital signage, point-of-sale (POS) systems, security systems, etc.).
RDP, or Remote Desktop Protocol: assistance teams can remotely access a device as if they were in front of it, which helps with remote troubleshooting and assistance. Remote access, also known as remote desktop tools, is frequently a feature in both MDM and RMM platforms. Typical remote desktop tools include TeamViewer, Splashtop, and LogMeIn.
