Testosterone is an androgenic hormone that does not directly cause hair loss. However, it can be converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), another hormone that can does testosterone cause hair loss. DHT can bind to and damage hair follicles, causing them to shrink and accelerating male- or female-pattern baldness. In this case, oral DHT inhibitors, such as finasteride or dutasteride, may be prescribed to reduce DHT levels and hair loss. Women may benefit from spironolactone, an oral medication that regulates androgenic hormones like DHT. Minoxidil can be used topically or orally to strengthen hair follicles and increase their thickness and growth.
